Students show a lot of determination to find a way to solve problems. The problems could be in math, reading, lunch, art, or life. As an educator, I strive to give my students the skills and materials needed to solve the problems they encounter. I have a very dynamic group of students. They have a love for learning and a willingness to attempt new pursuits.
Through DonorsChoose.org, with the help of all the amazing donors, students are able to have experiences where they learn new skills or master old ones.
When students are done with a specified task, they want to find new ways to express their learning. As a project is funded it shows students that people are invested in their success. Using the materials requested allows students to find another way to show their learning/mastery with items that might not have been available otherwise.
My Project
I benefitted from seeing a great presenter, Dave Burgess, talk to the district I was working in at time time quite a few years ago. He talked about teaching like a pirate throughout the school year. While I was immediately set on saying “Aye, matey,” that was not the message. The idea was to find a hook or way to get students interested in what you were going to help them learn. Since that day 7 plus years ago, that is something I have worked towards each year.
My students find messages from me that might say “November 29th is going to be magical” or “You don’t want to miss next Tuesday.” Whatever the message or form my surprises take, it guarantees that students will become interested.
That interest is carried over into whatever lesson or skill we are working on at the time.
My goal with this project is to give more to my students. They love learning new things and being challenged. The Post It Notes are for them to create pictures on out windows that they first had to plan out by graphing. My excitable personality has shown my students how important I believe learning is and how much it can and will impact their lives.
