My students need STEM materials like 4M table top robots, straws, tablecloths. storage containers and arithmetic games to be able to implement STEM activities that they otherwise would not have access to.

My Students
I am a teacher in a Title I school, and my students are faced with many challenges in and out of the classroom.
Our fifth grade is comprised of 52 exceptional students who show up every day, eager to learn, despite the challenges they face outside of our learning community.
Many students face challenges that are incomprehensible to the majority of us, and still they show up ready to learn.
Our students need social and emotional support in addition to support in closing learning gaps. Their success is our success, and they need us to give them the best learning opportunities.
My Project
The 2017-2018 school year will be a time to introduce my 5th graders to STEM. I plan to have students research robotics and sailboats in an attempt to deepen their understanding of the mechanics. Once research and discussions are done, they will have time to begin constructing.
My students will be so excited for the hands-on approach to learning.
Once research is complete each student will work on a team to construct a robot using the kits (4M table top robot) as a base for construction (but not the instructions). Students will also create sailboats using the pool noodles as bases, the straws as masts, and the table cloths as sails. During both construction stages students will test, document, adapt, and re-test until they have created their best version. They will document the process and report on their learning and how their understanding of a sailboat or a robot has changed.
Additionally, students will engage in game play (Original Krypto) to deepen their number sense and understanding of mathematics. My students will utilize Set and Krypto to practice mathematical thinking during free time in class. I will spend several days teaching and practicing the analytical and operational skills needed and then allow them to develop their own strategies through game play.
