This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Children are like wet cement. Whatever falls on them makes an impression." - Dr. Hiam Ginnot
A typical day in kindergarten is very active and busy.
Students continue to do much of their learning through active learning and hands-on activities. For many of my students, it is their first experience in a school setting. Many of them did not attend preschool or pre-kindergarten. They are always ready and enthusiastic about learning different things and in different ways.
As a Title I school, most of our students are on a free or reduced-price lunch program. They are also provided with free breakfast daily. We have a large population of Limited English Proficient students. The kids do not see this as an obstacle. They are just as ready and eager to learn as anyone else.
Our school building definitely shows its age but as they say, it's what’s on the inside that counts. We have amazing students and wonderful teachers. We have many parents who volunteer their time on a weekly basis. Our school pride is evident as you walk through the hallways.
My Project
Many of the jobs that are becoming available for graduates are in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. Therefore in recent years STEM education is being introduced to students as young as preschool.
At the kindergarten level, STEM education is fun, exciting, and creative.
The Picasso tiles will allow students to create structures by fitting different shapes that are different sizes. These are the early beginnings of mathematics and engineering. The Pipe Builders will allow students to work together to put together a structure that will allow marbles to travel all the way through without any obstruction. The Lakeshore Manipulative Library will allow the students to use their creativity while at the same time learning to problem solve and work cooperatively.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
