Help me give my students various leveled readers that are mostly science or nonfiction, Action-Stackerstm Premium Building Sets, K’NEX simple machine sets (levers and pulleys, gears), Kids First Robot Engineer Sets, and comfy floor seats.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a small, culturally diverse school with students from Pre-K through fifth grade. My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and have diverse learning needs.
Many of my students this year are struggling readers who find it difficult to stay engaged in lessons and activities.
Many of them are interested in learning but struggle to focus because the materials are too difficult for them or are not interesting enough to keep them focused. My students are interested in learning about robotics and Science, using technology, and creating and learning about Art.
My Project
Many of my students are reading below grade-level expectations but my classroom library is very limited in books available for those struggling readers to read. The books I do have in their levels are mostly fiction. The books that I have requested will not only allow me to increase the number of books I have available for my struggling readers, they will also provide my students with high interest books that will expose them to Science, STEM, or other nonfiction topics.
I hope that having building sets, simple machines sets, and the robot engineer sets will help my students increase their interest in STEM and cause them to become more interested about reading about STEM related topics in the leveled readers.
These materials should not only increase my students’ knowledge of a STEM, but also increase their reading fluency and comprehension.
The comfy floor seats will help my students enjoy reading during our silent reading time. I have a few cushions and a few beanbags that are beginning to fall apart. My students love using these to get comfortable around the classroom while they read a book. I only allow students who are actively reading to use the beanbags or cushions during our silent reading time. The comfy floor seats will give my students a few more options and will hopefully encourage more of my students to read.
