This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students who have come to me this year are active and thrive on challenges. They need toys that allow them to problem solve and create new and different things. My students need large blocks, LEGO bricks, Magna-Tiles and other educational toys to build, create, and explore and cultivate engineering skills. These toys develop fine motor skills and can be used to build small and large structures. They're great for collaboration, too!
My students are energy-filled, happy kids who are thrilled to come to school to learn and play, but it is also the only place many of them are fed.
I have many boys this year who need challenge and movement to pique their interest in learning. The toys and learning tools I am requesting are the only creative outlet many of these children have.
At home they watch TV and play video games. There are no books, no games, no outdoors, and sometimes no adults. School needs to be a safe place to learn, but it is also a place to feel loved. Students need to move around or interact with manipulative objects or anything that gives them an outlet to create something and have the joy of showing what they built.
My Project
The big blocks allow students to develop basic engineering skills by constructing large structures. The Magna-Tiles, small blocks, and LEGO bricks incorporate construction while also developing stronger hand muscles and coordination which are important pre-writing skills. These toys are also great for my little 3- and 4-year-old students, because they encourage collaboration and problem solving which aids in language development. These toys have been carefully selected to disguise STEM and pre-writing foundations as play. They'll never know!
My children will have an opportunity to use materials which they do not have access to at home.
Collaboration and problem solving with their peers will develop communication and language skills. They will be able to build and rebuild anything they can think of to create with developmentally appropriate toys.
