STEM for Learning & Fun in Need of Supplies!

My students need supplies for our STEM class: popsicle sticks, rubber bands, straws, batteries, geers, and solar powered rover kits.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. L. Walker's classroom raised $371

This project is fully funded

My Students

My scholars are a diverse and enthusiastic group elementary students live in a rural community in Hawaii. They are all participants of the afterschool STEM for Learning & Fun class that I teach on Mondays. My class contains a mixture of both first and second graders with and without special needs.

Many of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources available to them for hands on learning outside of school.

It is for this reason that their time in this class is so important and that their experiences be the best they can possibly be. Our scholars' love and enjoyment for learning STEM in this class is evident in their participation and engagement.

My Project

This project will provide our first and second grade afterschool STEM class with the materials necessary to push our learning further than it has before. At the beginning of the year, these students did an amazing job learning about STEM concepts and thinking outside the box to solve STEM challenges.

With the start of the new quarter, I would like to push their learning even further by building a simple rubber band powered car utilizing straws, rubber bands and bottle caps.

Following this car lesson, with my guidance, students will learn about Electricity by building a simple fan with a mini motor, gears, batteries and brackets. We will then build a propelled car using the fan that we assembled in the previous lesson. Next, we’ll move on to a simple car using the motor and batteries. We’ll end the series of lessons by assembling a Solar Powered rover kit.
