My students are sweet, funny, wonderful kiddos! They come from many different backgrounds, although the majority of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Our school serves both of our city's homeless shelters, so for many of my students, school is the place they feel the safest. Yet, even with so much adversity, my students consistently surprise me with what they can accomplish despite the challenges that may be in their way.
Our school is a warm and caring place for our students to come to every day, with staff that work extremely hard to help each child learn and grow.
I am blessed to be their teacher, and I will do everything I can to help them reach their full potential.
My Project
The materials in this project would get used daily and make a huge difference in our learning!
Getting whiteboard tables would save time, increase engagement, and boost collaboration between students during our math block!
I teach math to both first grade classes, and collaborating with others is a huge part of my math block! My students play math games, solve problems, and complete math journals all with their peers, and we teach them to show and explain their thinking as part of the process. Getting to write ON THE TABLE would be a huge motivator for reluctant mathematicians and encourage them to give it a go. It would also give them a larger space to record their thinking, as typical student sized whiteboards sometimes don't provide enough space for those overachievers!
The STEM toys and sensory materials would be used during playtime. I am ecstatic that for the first time in 8 years, first graders are getting playtime every single day! (We only used to be able to play on Fridays before.). I want my playtime to be meaningful and encourage exploration, which is why I think the STEM toys and sensory table items will be the perfect fit!
