My Students

I work in the second largest and most highly impacted district in my state. The students in my school are affected by poverty and low academic achievement. 70% of the students in my school receive free or reduced-price lunches. Even though the majority of my students live in financial distress, my school does not benefit from Title 1 funding. This is where your generosity can make a positive impact for students in my school.

Based on our beginning of the year diagnostic reading screener, DIBELS, only 41% of the students in my school are reading at grade level.

My school services a diverse group of students comprised of various English language abilities, academic achievement, and special needs. Many of our students come from families where academics is not a top priority due to their urgent financial hardships and/or other crisis they face on a daily basis.

My Project

To increase students' reading achievement, students must feel motivated to read and have access to leveled text. The collection of highly motivating STEM and informational stories will help to increase students' motivation for reading and foster their curiosity for STEM topics.

Strategically partnered pairs of students will choose books from the STEM library based on their interests and lexile reading level.

They will be given 20 minutes each day to chorally read with their partner to practice fluency, accuracy, vocabulary, and comprehension from their text. Students may also check out the books to read at home.

Students' reading proficiency and growth will be monitored throughout the school year using the DIBELS screener.

Research has shown that this type of reading fluency practice, also known as dyad reading, has resulted in high levels of reading proficiency and growth in students. My school district has even identified dyad reading as one of their "evidence-based high yield strategies." Even though my school district has discovered an effective reading strategy to help increase student achievement, they do not have the funds to purchase the materials needed to implement the program in my school. This is where your contribution is imperative. Your donation of Leveled STEM Non-Fiction Book Sets will help my students practice reading at their own level and pace. Please help my students discover the love of reading!
