My Students

My students are mainly from an English as a Second Language (ESL) population. They are eager to learn new things. More than 75% of our students receive free lunch. Over 20% are homeless. Our school teaches bell to bell and has an extended day.

Every time I teach science, the students are eager to learn, but sometimes it's hard because we don't have all the materials we would like to teach a certain concept or skill.

In today's world, the students need to learn different jobs and be able to think out of the box.

This project will allow students to do just that. Every time we do science, my students are filled with excitement and awe when we do something new and fun!

My Project

With this computer, my student will work "smarter together." I will teach them some basic coding skills which are third grade appropriate. We will start with the computer basics and how to use the computer. We will then move on to learning about coral reefs and flight.

Once the students have learned all they can about the topic and done hands-on activities to get them excited about the topic, they will go back to the computer to create a game.

I will have the students use a simple coding program and they will be allowed to create their own game either about coral reefs/ocean life or about flight.

These games will be fun to create and educational because they will show me what the students have learned about the topics that we studied. They will also give the students choices about what their final project will be. We are working smarter together because we will be working with each other. We will work in small teams or pairs and be able to ask other class members for their ideas and suggestions.

My project will make a difference because it will give these students the hunger to become scientists in the future. It will teach them about different engineering jobs as well as technology jobs. Donations will improve my classroom by allowing me to do this great lesson with the students. I am hoping that at the end of this unit, the students will show enthusiasm for science and have better knowledge what it takes to build a phone or computer app which are things we use all the time.
