Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's often said that as we grow older we begin to get less curious. My students defy this. As the school year goes on, they get more curious as they make connections between concepts and start looking at the world in new ways.

My students are curious and creative problem solvers who make insightful observations as they engage with and learn from each other.

I teach at a Title I school with a diverse population of students who show me every day that, if given the chance, they will rise to the occasion.

My Project

What do you remember most from your middle school science class? Chances are it wasn't reading through the textbook and answering questions or sitting passively in your seat as you listened to your teacher give you information. Chances are what you remember was something that was hands-on, active, and piqued your curiosity. Something that made you wonder, "Why did that happen?" and challenged your thinking.

One of my main goals as a science teacher is to provide students with an engaging, hands-on science education and I've found one of the best ways to engage students is to give them a problem to solve.

During this project, students will use our donated materials to complete a range of chemistry-related challenges such as identifying mystery powders, designing and testing a protocol for separating mixtures, engineering a solar water distillation device, and testing student made bioplastics. Not only will students be learning and applying physical science concepts as they engage in these hands-on projects, but students will also have the chance to think creatively as they come up with solutions. In addition, these projects can be tied to real world environmental issues ranging from water availability to waste management to provide context and meaning.

As well as engaging students in science content, this project will also serve to strengthen students' science process skills as they generate questions, design scientific experiments, collect and analyze data, and engage in scientific argumentation with their peers. In the end, students will not just be better creative thinkers who have a conceptual understanding of science content, but also better classroom scientists who understand not just what science is but also how it is done.
