My Students
We are a Title I school located in Harlem. The students in my class are entering school for the very first time. They are 2.5 years old to 3 years old (they must turn three by December 31st).
In my school, most students come from low-income households headed by single parents, some even live in foster homes or shelters.
All of our students qualify for and receive free breakfast and lunch daily, and our working families are struggling to make ends meet. My school consists of 55% Black students, 39% Hispanic or Latino students, 4% Other Nationalities, and 2% White. 33% of our students have special needs, and 11% are English Language Learners. We are very diverse.
Having materials for my Pre-K students to explore and learn through play are necessary!!
My Project
My PreK classroom is designed to reflect my personal belief that children learn best through play and hands-on experiences. Our current STEM center is in need of new science and math materials and toys to provide my students with those hands-on experiences and allow them to engage in play as a means of exploration and learning.
These new STEM materials will promote science, engineering, and math concepts.
Students will be encouraged to use creativity and imagination in their work while also being exposed to academic vocabulary and discourse. In addition to the academic learning experiences provided through the use of these materials, my students will be building upon their fine and gross motor skills when building with magna tiles and the other science materials, like magnets. A donation to this project will open a world of STEM possibilities for my PreK students!
