Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are predominately English Language Learners, with 80-85% coming from the low socio-economic status. While they are eager to learn and work hard, they do not have many resources at home. My students are excited about coming to school each day and love to learn. I have students that love to work both independently, as well as in pairs and groups. I love seeing my students overcome challenges by sticking with a problem or project and never giving up!
My Project
I want to create an engaging, hands on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) center for my classroom. I want an area where the students will imagine, collaborate, and use their creativity to engineer different projects. I have been wanting to create a STEM center for a few years now, but I have not had the resources. My students love to build with LEGOs, but I never had enough to incorporate them into a daily center. The simple machine sets from LEGO that I am requesting comes with a curriculum to help me guide my students as they problem solve to create and build a digital accessory, repeated patterns, a classroom accessory, and a variety of simple machines. In the STEM center I will also use the LEGO sets to enhance my ELA curriculum. For example, after reading “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” the students will build a bridge to recreate the story. Having a STEM center in my classroom will allow my students to use a part of their brain I don’t ask them to use enough. This project will help the students enjoy learning while challenging themselves at the same time.
