My Students
My students are sweet and unique teens in the Urban public school - in Rochester NY. There are very few opportunities and funds for our students and generally, teachers try to afford as many opportunities as possible for hands-on and more interactive lessons as possible. I’m currently teaching a self-contained Earth science course for students with severe social and emotional concerns. (12:1:1 SC). For the last 8 years Shadow, our beloved classroom rabbit, offered students support in reducing stress caused when triggered. Unfortunately, Shadow passed, of natural causes, not too long ago devastating everyone. Not great timing with present-day tensions and stresses so high. Therefore, We have adopted a new bunny, Hopkins, as named by my students - is curious- and my students are curious as to what she likes, and needs.
Our beloved pet has not only offered a soft friend and companionship to my students but also has offered a spark to their curiosities in science- a field so often considered “difficult” or “too hard” for them.
They are designing “enrichment” activities for her, so that she, too, may enjoy our learning environment.
My Project
Students in my urban science class are going to experiment on ideal bunny care and create a unique and habitable environment for our bunny to be curious and learn throughout our school day. With the requested rabbit house, pellets, cage liners, toys, treats, and other materials, students will design creative puzzles, games and obstacle courses for the bunny. Students will also learn proper pet care and management. Our students lost our beloved bunny Shadow -we had for 8+ years, and now felt the need to bring on a new pet. They want to teach her how to be healthy and explore her new environment in the best way possible- through exploratory learning. This encourages students' creativity and engineering modeling and designs that align with the new next-gen science standards and also helps inspire them to be consistently attending and active members of our class. A win-win for both our bunny and our students. Please consider making all this creativity HOP!
