This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the Library Media Specialist at my school. My school is an elementary school located in an inner city. Over ninety-eight percent of our students receive free lunch. Our school is located in a high poverty area with over eighty percent of the residents living below the poverty line and receiving state services.
Students view our school as a safe haven and look for opportunities to explore challenges.
My students need to be exposed to 21st century learning. Maker education fosters curiosity, tinkering, and iterative learning, which in turn leads to better thinking through better questioning. confidence, and natural collaboration. Ultimately, the outcome of maker education and educational makerspaces leads to determination, independence, creative problem solving, and an authentic preparation for the real world by simulating real-world challenges.
My Project
I want to use the requested Magnetic Blocks, Littlebits, and Snap Circuits and other STEM building resources to create a space where students can have the flexibility to create, engage, and explore. STEM Makerspaces within schools and school libraries provide powerful contexts and opportunities for students to learn and develop new skills. As the makerspace movement “draws upon the innately human desire to make things using our hands and our brains”, the STEM building resources will provide this necessary outlet for my students, fueling engagement, creativity and curiosity at the same time. I feel that students who participate in using Snap Circuits and Magnetic Blocks involves innovation and will be inquisitive, imaginative and motivated. These STEM building resources will boost my students confidence to be more willing to solve real problems that could help people.
STEM Building Makerspace learning can also empower my students, helping them to shift from being passive consumers of information and products to active creators and innovators.
Research states that “Making lets you take control of your life, be more active, and be responsible for your own learning!”
