My active learners love their school and our STEM focus. With the new K-12 science standards rolling out, our school is at the forefront in science education. My school is an exciting place to teach and learn. I want to make sure the kids have all they need to support their learning.
My school is in a diverse area of Los Angeles and has a university partnership.
We are focused on innovation and our vision is "high achievement for all through STEM education." I teach 26 active learners who love their school and their community. We provide lots of opportunities for hands-on learning. We also read and write about science. For example, just this week, while working on our earth science topics, we were building 3-D models of our earth while reading about different landforms and bodies of water and writing about how changes to the earth occur. However, sometimes being in the forefront means we have to source our own materials because our textbooks haven't caught up with the new science standards.
My Project
The items I have requested are student subscriptions to Scholastic News with "Science Spin" as well as 6 brand new STEM books from the National Science Teacher Association 2016 list for "Outstanding Science Trade Books." Scholastic News arrives monthly and has up to date information and pictures that are designed to engage students. The "Science Spin" portion covers real world topics in a second grade accessible way. The new books will be a welcome addition to our classroom library. We are growing our collection of non-fiction STEM literature. In addition, the purchase of these reading materials also gives us access to the online science resources provided by Scholastic.
The materials I have selected will capitalize on students innate curiosity about science.
Kids love to learn about the world around them. For example, in my classroom, topics such as animals and natural events that are of high interest. My students are always asking questions to learn more about why things happen. Having access to resources where they can find the answers will motive them to read and write on these topics.
