My students need materials to create STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) bins where they can work and problem solve to prepare them for real-world problems.
My students come from a community where more than three-quarters of them live in low-income households. They worry about simple things that most people take for granted like warm food, a place to sleep at night, and clean clothes. Although these students may face a variety of struggles at home, they come to school to persevere through the challenges they see on a daily basis. It is my job as a teacher to create a classroom where they can forget about their troubles, even if it is only for a few hours a day.
My Project
These materials will be used to create STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Bins. Each bin will pose a new challenge for students to problem solve with their group.
Problem Solving while having fun!
Plastic Bins- The plastic bins will help organize and store the items for each STEM activity.
Building Bricks- Student's will need to create a table top hockey game with two goals, two hockey sticks and a puck.
Pattern Blocks- Student's will need to create the largest symmetrical design. 2D or 3D
Popsicle and Velcro- Student's will need to build the tallest possible freestanding tower without it falling over.
Dominoes- Student's will need to create the longest chair reaction our of dominoes.
Pipe Cleaners- Student's will need to create a net strong enough to catch a ball of paper.
Linking Cubes- Student's will need to make a marble maze with tunnels, dead ends and obstacles.
Foam Balls and Toothpicks- Student's will need to create a boat or raft that will hold 20 pennies without sinking.
