My class is a class of 32 enthusiastic learners who come from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. The majority of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them have already experienced homelessness at some point in their lives. Our classroom is our home away from home. We all come together as a community for lessons and fun activities. However, our resources are limited. We are in need of tools to help meet the needs of each individual learner in our classroom.
In our classroom, we are one big family, and we are part of a larger school community.
Some students struggle with daily academic skills, especially those students who find traditional learning activities difficult or who are learning English as their second language. My students come from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and it is important to celebrate the diversity that exists within our classroom. It is essential that my students learn to understand and celebrate their differences and similarities and to be respectful of other cultures, races, genders, and ideologies.
My Project
This year my students are learning in a hybrid model where some days of the week students are in person at school learning and other days of the week students are learning remotely from home. During this time, students have transitioned from using supplies they are typically used to, like pencil and paper and hands on manipulative, to using digital technology and learning apps. This has proved to be incredibly difficult for our students.
The Hand2Mind individual STEM Kits will be used during our weekly Friday Genius Hour Time.
Students will be able to have their own individualized supplies to bring STEM alive in our classroom or while learning from home. This will help to restore a sense of normalcy to our classroom while still being able to maintain safety procedures and have some fun with STEM.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
