My Students
My kindergarten students love to learn! They come to school each day eager to learn new things while also loving the structure and routine of the school day. Kindergarteners love all sorts of hands-on activities. Manipulatives are just one of those activities that they love. My students get so excited when they get a chance to participate in using manipulatives.
My students enter kindergarten in a variety of stages.
I have those that have had multiple years of preschool and those that have had no school experience. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate all activities. The use of manipulatives is just one of the ways I can help differentiate instruction.
My Project
Our class needs counting manipulatives, making 2-d shapes kits, exploring 3-d cube shapes, a coding mouse robot and working with gears kit. These various math and science manipulatives will give my students an opportunity to explore, learn and solidify basic math concepts and explore applied science through coding activities. These manipulatives will also help my students learn cooperation and teamwork as they will need to work together to solve problems and communicate with each other. I will use these manipulatives during our math tub time, a time when students work in small groups to learn, explore and reinforce math and science concepts taught. I will also use them during whole group instruction and one-on-one re-teach and enrichment.
Students learn best when participating in hands-on activities that they will remember and connect with.
Having these engaging activities and manipulatives in our classroom will give students the opportunity to make connections and take their learning to another level. These manipulatives will be used for years to come to strengthen math scores in our kindergarten classroom. They will also help instill a love of learning and that learning is fun and engaging!
