STEM and Music Combined! Bringing Out Their Best Creativity!
My students need drum sticks, drum heads, and buckets to learn and understand STEM concepts while creating their own mathematical masterpieces!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. L. Walker's classroom raised $705
This project is fully funded
My Students
My scholars are diverse group of 5th graders that live in a rural community in Hawai'i. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited access to resources and educational experiences to enrich their learning and their lives.
As their teacher, I hope to provide opportunities for learning through project based learning where they will be able to nurture their basic reading/math skills, encourage critical/creative thinking and develope collaborate with others.
This year, these scholars have proven to me time and time again that they are focused on what they need to do in school to be successful. These scholars amaze me each day with their focus learning, engagement during our lessons, and their excitement about what they will learn about next.
My Project
Learning about fractions and decimals has traditionally been a difficult topic to cover in 5th grade. Often times this challenge stems back to the scholars conceptual knowledge and understanding of these mathematical concepts. This project incorporates a subject that is challenging (Math) with something all of them love (Music!).
During this project, scholars will create a portfolio where they will express music as fractions bars, pie graphs, decimals and percents then perform their own mathematical compositions during the End of the Year Talent Show.
By composing and converting their own rhythms, students will utilize fractions in a creative way that will solidify the conceptual misunderstandings many of them struggle with.
As they are learning about fractions they will be able to feel the different through performing the rhythm on percussion instruments (drum sticks, drum heads, and buckets). As we perform their rhythms, we'll explore the science of sound and its effect on the different constructions of instruments used to create it. By examining the different structures and designs, students are better able to understand how to play these percussion instruments without muffling it's sound.
In addition to fractions, students will be able to convert musical notes into decimals and see its relationship to fractions. Performing the music and being able to decipher it's meaning (or code) will make it possible for students to understand why fractions with unlike denominators are not able to be added. This project brings together STEM and Music by utilizing their creative minds.
