STEM and Literacy Integration

My Students

This year I have 11 students in my kindergarten classroom. Of the 11 students, only 5 of them live in a two parent household. A majority of my students parents are already separated. In my classroom, I have 8 Caucasians, and 3 students of mixed race. Many of them come from low socioeconomic homes. Dunkerton is also a title 1 school, meaning we have a high percentage of low income families. I love how my students are engaged in every day learning and are risk takers when we explore a new area.

My Project

I will use the materials to implement a STEM center into my reading rotations. Due to high demands in math and literacy, science often gets left out of the schedule. Having a STEM center, helps students to get time creating and exploring ramps and pathways.

This center relates to the forces standards in kindergarten.

I did a trial run for my Masters course and the kids absolutely love it! They always want to be at the STEM center. In addition to being academic based, it give the kiddos a break from the hard mental work we do! Help me give my students get a cross curricular experience.
