My Students
I teach 32, 9-10 year olds and I wouldn't trade it for the world. My class is made up of a diverse population of students with varied interests and goals. About 10% of my class is learning English as a second language. In addition, I teach at a Title I school which means a large portion of the student population qualify for meals and assistance based on their socio-economic status.
My students come to school every day excited to learn.
They love to learn about science, especially through an environmental lens. Our school focuses on environmental sciences and how we can work together to save our planet. My students love to read and research the environment and nature. Each one of my students is unique and special in their own way and can make a difference. One of my many goals as a teacher is to teach them how to see themselves the same way.
My Project
In planning for the upcoming school year, I thought long and hard about how to make 4th grade a memorable and educational experience for all 32 of my students. In doing so, I want them to be able to think differently about topics and situations, manipulate items to help process new content, and most importantly to be creative and use prior and new knowledge to continuously grow.
These STEM activities will provide my students with access to new learning opportunities.
I would love to incorporate these items into daily lessons to either reinforce new information or to allow students to demonstrate an understanding of new content. Additionally, many of these resources will be utilized to also provide a Calm Corner for students when needed. Being able to visit the Calm Corner and manipulate puzzles or answer prompts about their emotions by building structures will also help my students social-emotional growth.
