I teach 105 5th grade students in a Title I district. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and home situations. In our school, we have spent lots of time, energy, and money on building our language arts and mathematics instruction. Now is the time for science.
As I look at my classes as a whole, I see gaps in my students ability to think critically, problem solve, and explore different solutions.
I want to help them become critical thinkers, young scientists, inventors, and confident lifelong learners.
I am asking for some STEM resources including a marble run, roller coaster challenge, circuit maze, and a slime kit. This will be the first time my students will be able to actually have hands-on STEM activities. Students love to learn while doing and not just watching. They will have the opportunity to now do and not just watch.
Having the requested Electric Current and Gravity Maze logic game, will not only have my students thinking critically but will allow them to learn about circuitry and how to use it to complete random challenges.
The Roller Coaster challenge kit will open the door to engineering. They will be able to use their imaginations to create their own roller coasters.
As for every child's favorite fad, the DIY slime kit will not only allow students to create their favorite past time activity, but learn about the chemistry of it and it's state of matter. As they make slime, we will be able to add metal filings to them to see it attract to magnets. While slime is something that most children are making at home, most of my students cannot afford to buy the materials to make it.
By being able to fit in with other kids making slime and tie it in with our Science lessons, all my students can feel included in the crazy fad of slime making while learning at the same time.
