STEM Activities Make Science Come Alive for Rural, Under-served Students
My students need science supplies for hands-on STEM lessons like owl pellets. They need safety equipment, like safety goggles to keep them protected and help them feel like real scientists.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a 4th/5th grade combo class at an elementary school. The school is a public school in a rural setting. Students in this classroom have faced challenges such as learning English, economic struggles, and societal problems in their neighborhoods. The district has an 86% poverty rate. Despite the many challenges they face, they are positive students eager to learn.
The students in my class are creative thinkers, ready to learn real-world skills and apply their knowledge and skills for positive change.
Our school is making changes to meet the students' social and emotional needs. We work hard on basic skills using projects, active-learning, and technology for 21st Century Skills.
My Project
A few years ago I received lab coats for my classroom. Wearing their lab coats, students call themselves Dr. and I hear them talking about how they feel like real scientists. Now we need safety glasses to protect their eyes and gloves to protect their skin. We will make electric circuits and I discovered the kits I have are missing parts. Owl Pellets help our life science units bring the outdoors into our classroom, allow the students to become biologists and ecologists.
STEM activities, where students use real supplies, provides under-served students the opportunity for hands-on, active learning.
Using real materials helps them see themselves in careers in STEM.
