STEM Activities For Challenging the Challenged Student

Help me give my students with special needs the materials they need to enrich their math experience alongside their peers.

My Students

I teach math enrichment to elementary students in an urban setting. My goal is to make math meaningful, appealing and accessible to all students. Many of my students have special needs and have trouble managing traditional math and engineering manipulatives because they lack fine motor skills.

My special education students love to count, manipulate and construct using hands-on materials but because of their disabilities, need larger items that are easier to grasp and are not choking hazards.

Some students have shorter attention spans than regular education students and need appealing and enticing materials to grab and hold their focus.

The resources available through our math program suit the needs of the majority of my students, but are not appropriate or manageable for students with special needs. I'm excited to see these students engage in STEM activities when we hand them the appropriate materials!

My Project

I teach Math Enrichment to all students at my elementary school. Some of my students, however have unique needs and cannot utilize the manipulatives supplied by our math curriculum. My Special needs students deserve STEM activities that interest and challenge them while developing motor skills. The materials for this project are carefully chosen to be durable, enticing, and manageable, while being safe, non-choking hazards.

The magnets allow for easier construction and design work, while the Montessori toys develop fine motor through the use of tried and true manipulatives such as pegs and beads on strings.

Students will be excited to challenge themselves with these engaging toys and this teacher is already inspired to create lessons that develop STEM skills for students with learning disabilities and physical challenges!
