This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 6th through 8th graders at an urban middle school in Compton. Latinos make up 91% of our student population, and 9% of students are African-American. Additionally, 93% of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

My students come from demographics traditionally underrepresented and under served in STEM careers, which makes providing quality STEM programs all the more vital.

My students are hungry for STEM programs. They are amazing kids who, when given an opportunity, make the most of it.

My Project

FIRST LEGO League is a great STEM program that also combines 21st century learning skills and project-based learning. In addition to the research project, there is a robot game using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robot.

We need more color sensors, gears and axles, and additional pieces to help us build a better robot and more complex robot attachments.

Gears will help us learn and apply engineering principles; color sensors will help us learn more advanced programming techniques, and the Expansion and Forklift kits will help us have more building elements. This includes different sets of tires so that my students can experiment and test how different tires affect performance of the robot. Finally, the storage bin case will help us stay more organized and more efficient when we need to find pieces.
