it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Hardworking, motivated to learn and willing to help others is how I would describe most of my students. Being a combination teacher of fourth and fifth graders, most of them need to be independent workers and have the knowledge to seek out answers as I shuffle from one grade content to another. They are learning how to work as a team and develop communication skills that foster collaboration.
They love challenges and have already started classroom STEAM challenges that involve creating a catapult and building a tower that can hold weight.
My colleagues and I have begun incorporating STEAM challenges into our lesson plans and we have seen the excitement and the power that these challenges have on students. The ability to persevere and develop problem solving skills while fostering collaboration and teamwork is priceless.
My Project
STEAM lessons are extremely important for students as they prepare to enter the 21st-century workforce. When students work in groups on a project with a robot they quickly see that technical skills, such as coding, are very important. However, their robot won’t move if they don’t know how to collaborate with others and communicate their ideas. Through robotics in the classroom, students learn how to express themselves and listen and relate to others— honing valuable life skills.
Through robotics, students can learn more than just how to code.
They can learn skills in leadership, community involvement, communicating across different technology platforms, finding their passions, and teamwork, which will position them for success well beyond their school years. I’m excited to see the surprise benefits that teaching robotics in the classroom will uncover next!
