STEAMing through the Summer with Animalistic Creativity

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The ACE after-school program focuses on students interacting on many levels with our campus animals. This summer, we would like to incorporate the effect of animals in terms of Social Emotional Learning. During the summer, our students will take field trips and work in collaboration with a 4H Animal Science specialist, as well as a writing specialist to help students recognize the impact that animals have on humans in regards to empathy, social skills, and self-esteem.
It is our belief that implementing this curriculum during the summer will allow students to open up more and not be focused on academics.
Being in a relaxed, safe space will give students the environment they need to work on themselves before the upcoming school year, which alone will be stressful.
The materials provided for our summer camp will allow our students to write journal entries during Mindfulness and produce a final picture of an animal that they have come to value as a result of connectedness for the art exhibit.
