This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This is our third year teaching AP Precalculus at our school. Students have worked hard each year to prepare for their AP Precalculus exam in May. Graphing polar functions by hand, and understanding how the polar graphs 'move' differently from other graphs, has traditionally been one of the more difficult concepts for students to relate to. Sometimes, students are intimidated by the complicated-looking curves.

To make this topic less intimidating, I want to use Spirograph art, which takes polar graph concepts and makes them both fun and accessible in the form of a children's toy.

I remember spending hours creating intricate Spirograph art as a teen, and not even realizing that I was "doing math". I hope to have enough Spirograph sets to be able to let each group of students 'play' with the curves before they start interpreting the graphs. The kits will be reused for many years to come and can be shared with other math or art classes.

Being able to start this topic of study with something fun, accessible, and even beautiful will increase student engagement, confidence, and success! Thank you for helping my students reach for their goals!
