Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a public elementary school in Florida. We are a Title I school. The majority of the students at our school receive free lunch or a reduced lunch price. A large population of our students is ESOL Level 1, so they are non-English or limited English speakers. Although our school is predominately Hispanic, we do have students from many non-Hispanic countries. All of the students are, however, very eager to learn and explore the wonderful world of math and science.
My Project
My students will use the Math related books in order to have a better understanding of the math concepts introduced. These stories are fun and comical. The stories will be read and STEAM projects will be created using those math concepts. Many of the math concepts can be used in science as well. During the math center time, while I am working with a small group of students, another group of students can be working on their reading comprehension skills on the computers or rereading the math books. I will have created reading comprehension skills tests for each of the books donated. The students will use the headphones to listen to the story reread to them on a recorder as well as for taking the tests on the computer.
By combining math, science, and reading, I believe the students will have more success in achieving their full potential.
Many of these students do not have the means to buy math measuring tools or have computers at home to work on. These math books will enable the students to increase their reading comprehension skills as well as develop stronger math and science knowledge. When the students are having fun in a learning environment, they are learning more!
