My Project
For the past three years, I have used the book Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows with my second-grade students as the foundation for a literacy-based STEAM unit. This book not only engages students in an exciting adventure but also introduces them to enriched science vocabulary and critical concepts. Throughout the unit, we pair chapters with a hands-on STEAM activity, such as building terrariums or using robots to classify animals as carnivores, omnivores, or herbivores. These activities help my students make real-world connections to the scientific concepts introduced in the story.
By combining literacy with hands-on STEAM activities, I aim to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will benefit my students far beyond the classroom.
The goal is for students to gain confidence in their ability to connect reading with scientific exploration and innovation.
My current class set of books is worn and beginning to fall apart after years of use. A more durable set would ensure that the books can continue to be a central resource in my classroom for years to come, allowing for consistent learning across multiple students. By replacing these books, we can extend the life of this valuable unit, providing every student with a personal copy to engage with the story and explore STEAM topics in depth.
With a new class set of Zoey and Sassafras, I can ensure that they have the tools to further develop their skills in both literacy and STEAM, preparing them for a future full of possibilities.
