Our students are curious and driven; however like a lot of schools, they lack the funding to modernize STEAM programs. These children don’t have this technology at home and they need it to compete and succeed in this highly technological world. All of our students are unique, special, and talented and I am designing a student-centered STEAM curriculum that caters to those children. Our population is diverse both in terms of culture and socio-economic status. It’s one of the things I really love about our school. Students learn to respect and admire each other’s cultures creating a wonderful environment in which students collaborate and form bonds with each other. My goal is to use technology to deepen their budding minds.
My Project
We currently focus our technology program on the available resources through a computer. The computer is limiting though and I am looking to expand the lab to be a more hands-on collaborative environment where students get to create, build, design, and most importantly imagine.
By creating an environment in which the students have choice, independence, and collaboration, students will thrive.
I have researched the LEGO Education and feel it would be the right fit for our students.
In this setting, students will have 1-4 LEGO Stations where students can choose what they want to work on.
The stations will break down as follows:
1. The Creative Lego Brick set which encourages students to create all sorts of life-like or imaginary figures, objects, and buildings. It helps children develop fine motor skills while constructing and building.
2. The Simple and Powered Machine Set in which the students can use the LEGO bricks to explore and design engineering structures.
3. The WeDo 2.0 Core Set and is based on science standards and enhances students curiosity and science skills. Students use a tablet to build and create various structures based on scientific principles.
4. The Early Simple Machines Set and includes gears, levers, wheels, pulleys, axles and more. Students at this station will need to use critical thinking skills to solve problem solving tasks.
