My Students

My students live in the rural, volcanic side of Hawaii's "Big Island." The students come from a variety of backgrounds including but not limited to Native Hawaiian, Filipino, Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander. Because of the isolation of our island, many have never traveled to a city, many have never left the island or the state of Hawaii. Parents and grandparents work in agriculture, ranching, fishing, the sciences, the tourism industry, education, food services, and more.

My students come to school for so much more than learning; it is a place they feel safe, loved, and cared for.

Our classroom is an inclusion classroom, which means we accommodate children with specialized learning plans, striving to never isolate kids into separate spaces. Although each child varies greatly in academics, they all love to be at school. They are so fun, and eager to see what each day will bring for them. I feel so blessed to be able to be a part of such a great group of kids!

My Project

The building tools, crafts, and storage unit will be the first things we have in our classroom to begin Maker Stations. These items will give my students an opportunity to be creative and encourage that they work together. One wonderful thing about Maker Stations is that students don't always succeed. This teaches them to have endurance and patience.

With these items, my students will be able to build, create, and design many things to get their mind thinking like engineers!

Students will be able to explore causing them to think outside the box. I envision this Maker Space being done every Friday afternoon, and I can't wait to watch my students faces when they realize they have created something amazing!
