Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"When can we finish programming our robot?" "Can we use the teacher laptop to program the EV3 or are you using it?" These are recurring questions in my class this year. My students have designed and created their EV3 robot. However, they are challenged to program because we do not have student laptops they can take around the room for the robotics/programming center. We are a STEM magnet center in northeast Los Angeles. Unfortunately, we do not have the technology to carry on with our plans of a robotics center in the classroom.

Mark Zuckerberg said, "In fifteen years we'll be teaching programming just like reading and writing... and wondering why we didn't do it sooner."

I do not want to wait fifteen years for my students to program and they don't want to wait either. Without the proper technology in the classroom, I can not empower my students and prepare them for the 21st century.

My Project

A new focus in my classroom this year has been the robotics programming center. My students have learned and continue to go through the Engineering Design Process. They have learned to ask questions, plan, create, execute, revise and improve the robot design they put together in small groups. What we need now is an Apple MacBook Pro so that my students can get into their groups and program their robot to complete tasks. The hands-on experience of designing and building their robot has provided opportunities to communicate and problem-solve with each other. These are skills applicable to real world situations that they will need as adults.

Technology is best when it brings people together.

Having the MacBook Pro in our classroom will provide opportunities for my students to work together. It will help enhance the skills they need for our classroom robotics programming center and our after school magnet Robotics Club. The opportunities provided in the classroom will widen their knowledge about the different careers in Science and Engineering. Ultimately, I want my students to be ready for the real world. They already work diligently toward a common goal. The goal is to program their robot to complete missions. My hope is that some students will become the next frontier programming engineers!
