Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a reading intervention teacher who meets with around sixty students (first-eighth) each day on a rotating basis. My students are struggling readers who are reading below grade level. In my class, it is not rare for students to grow in leaps and bounds, increasing their reading level by two or even three grade levels. Some come in with a distaste for reading, but come out loving reading as they become more confident in their reading ability.
They push themselves, eager to learn, improve and excel each time they enter my room.
During my lunch hour, they would knock at my door, asking to be let in so that they can practice their reading. They truly want to excel as students and readers.
My Project
STEAM and literature are not polar opposites. In fact, literature can actually motivate students to be scientists, engineers, artists, or mathematicians. Books like "Rosie Revere, Engineer" and "What Do You Do with a Problem" encourages students to make mistakes and solve problems using their mind and the world around them. Other books like "Roller Coaster" and "Ice Boy" introduces scientific concepts such as force, energy, and states of matter in a fun and engaging way for young STEAMers.
Through these books my students will not need to be afraid of "STEAM" as this difficult and only for "smarter" kids and instead will boosts their confidence as they STEAM ahead.
My students will learn about motion and force and Einstein and art and building bridges and our environment and the scientific method to solve everyday problems. These will make such a big difference in their outlook in what it means to be a scientist or an engineer or a mathematician.
