My Students

I teach in a diverse, Title I school in a suburb of Washington, DC. Preschool is often the children's first time being away from their parents, so I strive to make it a fun and engaging environment.

My students are two, three, and four-year-olds with special needs.

The children have a variety of disabilities, including Down syndrome, blindness, Autism, developmental delay, and language disorders. I also have a few students who are typically developing who serve as peer models for language and socialization. My students come from culturally and linguistically diverse families and many face socio-economic challenges.

My Project

My students love to build! We use a variety of building toys each day during our table time and learning centers. I am requesting new toys to add to our collections and expand our skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). We have a good start to our collection, but I am always looking for new toys to use creatively across our curriculum.

My young students will learn important math, science, and problem solving skills by experimenting with open-ended building toys.

Math concepts that will be developed include length, measurement, comparison, number, estimation, symmetry, and balance. Students will also expand their vocabularies by learning colors, shapes, and prepositions while building. New translucent building sets will be used on our light table, to explore science concepts such as mixing colors as well as concepts related to art and design.

Duplo are always a popular toy in our classroom, so expanding our collection will help end some disputes over preferred items, especially the cars, animals, and people figures. Cars and rolling toys will help us learn science concepts related to gravity and speed (how can we make our cars go fast or slow?). Magnetic building toys and suction cup toys will also help build science knowledge as the children play.
