Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 4th graders are creative, enthusiastic learners, and they love to think outside of the box! Instead of wrapping up our geography unit with a test, for example, we created 3D maps of our beloved state, painted, labeled, and added unique and personal touches that illustrated all we'd learned about maps, landforms, and Texas regions. We concluded our poetry unit by hosting a "poetry cafe," complete with "coffee" (hot cocoa) and rich literature read out loud by our student writers.
My Project
My students use Legos (and similar building toys) to tell stories. They have recreated the Battle of the Alamo in excruciating detail, dabbled in urban planning, and practiced conflict resolution with peers. Lego improves creativity, encourages teamwork, and helps develop problem solving and math skills.
Using 3D printing has greatly improved my kids' fine motor skills, given them a medium to try out innovative ideas and designs, and has served as a calming, multi-sensory art form.
We have had class discussions on the many ways Legos and 3Doodlers can support our learning; my students are brimming with ideas and need more filament materials along with more Lego materials!
