STEAM Project Based Students Need Help to Continue Mapping

My Students

My class somehow is full of bright, fun, and eager-to-learn students who want to create high quality video projects and documentaries. And they need some technology assistance from the Donorschoose.org community to complete their dreams.

My students love trying out new technology, taking it apart, and putting it back together to make it better.

My students do STEM and STEAM based activities all day. We are a project based class, and thereby students make things--ie. video documentaries, musical scores, banners and posters for clients in our community.

We are mostly a Title I school in Hawaii, and therefore most of my students in class dont have cellphones or much technology at home. Our class is the place where they are introduced to computer and visual technology. We then show them the career possibilities/career pathways where they can be trained to perform jobs using these new technologies.

My Project

Our newest collaborative project is working with The Maritime Arts Academy at our school in doing drone mapping of the Kona Coast, and using the pictures we take to create detailed coastal maps drawn by hand using the drone pics as a model. We plan to get into thermal imaging using the FLIR thermal imaging software/technology. We just need some help replacing our 3 year old drone that we are on the verge of wearing out.

A new SPARK drone from DJI with a backpack carrying case will allow us to continue doing the coastal mapping project we started this past summer with our partners in the Maritime Arts Academy.

We will be able to map some more cultural Hawaiian coastal spots with our 360 and FLIR imaging technology, and the new drone will get us there. We can rest assured that when we get to our remote coastal sites, that our new (hopefully) drone will start, fly, return to base, and not cause us technical trouble like our old one is doing on every shoot now.
