Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

NV High School students come from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, and life experiences. This project engages students who are behind in credits, uninterested in traditional schooling or need additional support to be successful.

For my students, who often require high-interest content and hands-on activities to re-engage them in science, STEAM integration into Environmental Science brings learning alive and invites them into a more interesting approach to education.

My Project

Students at NV Alternative/Continuation High School learn and participate better with new hands-on learning approaches. With the uncertainty of a full return to in-person, students will likely finish the school year in a hybrid or distance learning model. Science learning typically involves hands-on experimentation and manipulation of materials. Since my students come from a variety of socioeconomic situations, it is imperative that they be given materials to use at home rather than rely on what they have at home.

Teaching Environmental Science through a STEAM lens re-engages students in the content by providing an engaging way of interacting with topics like urban development, groundwater contamination and ecological conservation.

Students can express their understanding through art and engineering models rather than traditional assessment.

With these materials, students have alternative options of learning STEAM from home, and therefore can participate in activities that will help them retain Environmental Science concepts.
