Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Approximately 70% of our amazing students qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. The school also supports a high English Language Learner population, and students with multiple learning disabilities like ADD, ADHD, and autism. For the most part, these students are in a regular classroom, with modifications to meet their special needs. Many of our students come from immigrant families and speak a second language at home. The majority of students do not have access to challenging and engaging activities that foster critical thinking and creativity.
My goal is to create a educational space that fosters the love of learning through making and engaging in challenging and creative learning activities.
My students love playing challenging games and creating, but our tight daily schedule does not leave much time for such activities. As a result, I am working to set-up and equip a STEAM Makerspace that students will have access to during their lunch recess. I would like to encourage my students to engage in brain building activities, by providing them with challenging and creative learning games and projects.
My Project
The STEAM Makerspace will support an energetic, innovative, and creative group of Kindergarten through 6th grade students. I would like to offer a school wide STEAM Lunch Club three times a week.
I need materials to engage students in indoor Science, Technology, Math, Engineering and Art activities.
The materials I have chosen are based on an analysis of my students' diverse needs, learning styles, and interests. Different activity stations will be set up each week, and students can choose to engage in any activity.
Origami is an age old craft of paper folding that many students don't engage in any more. Origami is said to engage the entire brain, using hand-eye coordination, visual and spatial reasoning, math reasoning and attention, among many more. Origami is an excellent activity for students with ADHD, as it builds attention because it requires focus and concentration to be successful. Containers will be used to organize all these materials, so many students can continue to benefit from these materials in the future.
The copper tape, diodes, and batteries can be used for a number of activities at various grade levels.
The microphones and green screen will support the older students in photography, video creating, and editing.
The iron will be used to for creations made with perler beads and the soldering kit will be used to create projects with circuit boards.
