The students that I am privileged to teach on a daily basis come from a variety of backgrounds. In any of the six classes, you can find a student whose family has been entrenched in the community for numerous generations sitting next to a student who has only lived in this country for a few months. This diversity provides a few obstacles, but the positive opportunities provided by a multicultural classroom simply out-way any roadblocks. As the landscape of education changes so does the makeup of the students.
In addition to the variety of cultural backgrounds, the classes consist of an array of learning styles and abilities.
Similar to cultural diversity, ability levels and learning styles provide challenges that determine the success of the students. It is the combination of these challenges that shape the young boys and girls in my classes. I am proud to say that they meet any and all tests with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
My Project
Students of today face many challenges that will have a direct impact on their future success. In my classroom, we try our best to address the changing landscape of science. It becomes more evident each day that having a solid foundation in the skills associated with technology is essential. Therefore, we have decided to come out of our comfort zone and introduce aspects of robotics and coding into our learning.
Products like Micro:bits and Spheros provide the best opportunity for our introductory learners to acquire robotic and coding skills.
I must admit I too am among the learners that will benefit from the use of these technologies. Together we will begin this adventure into the world of computer science. We will discover many aspects of topics we currently cover by infusing computer-based learning with our traditional project-based activities. I am anxious to help my students move closer to achieving their goals and broadening their dreams.
