STEAM: Integrating the Arts and History in a Science Classroom!
Help me give my students STEAM to study LIFE & Our Coastal HISTORY
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Lyles's classroom raised $526

My Students
I teach at a public charter high school. We are located on an island that is bordered by brackish water marshes and the Atlantic Ocean. We offer a wide variety of programs that positively impact all grade, socioeconomic and ability levels. Our area is surrounded by industry and tourism. Our families come from very varied backgrounds; medical, legal, education, business, tourism and those that have trouble finding and keeping employment.
My students are inquisitive and eager to learn!
All of my students love learning new 'stuff'. However, they prefer when I tell them information. I think reading is critical for them. Research also shows that visualizing learning is a great way to help students retain information. Reading hard copy books and learning how to sketchnote will help my students retain information and gain a deeper understanding of science content. The digital world is dominating our world right now. Decreasing student screen time is important to me. Hard copy books are a great way to engage students in science while taking away digital distractions during reading and visualization of their learning.
My Project
SCIENCE, ART and HISTORY? These words aren't often said together but art and history are intertwined in the science we study. The books I am requesting will help my students gain a better understanding of the history of life on planet Earth and also help them learn more about the history involved with two of our native plants: indigo and sweetgrass.
Using STEAM principles in my science classroom will help students cement their understanding of the topics we learn about.
Sketchnoting in a great way to help students visualize their learning. Life: The First 4 Billion Years is a very visual book that will help students 'see' how the history of life on Earth has unfolded. We live in coastal South Carolina. Sweetgrass and indigo are two plants that have strong monetary and cultural ties to our region. These books will be used to give students the history behind the science of cultivating these plants and we will also grow them around our new outdoor classroom that is slated for construction in Spring 2021.
