STEAM-ing Up the Iditarod

My students need a bunch of books, an Ipeveo Document Camera, and fabric/art supplies.

My Students

My students are economically disadvantaged. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, and many of them are the children of deployed military personnel. I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a transient student population. Over 50% of my class come and go during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. They generally do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.

The students in my sixth grade class are trying very hard to be successful but they need help with stimulating STEAM projects that our school cannot supply.

My Project

My students are hands-on, experiential learners who have a hard time with math and science concepts. I desperately need some help to turn my class around. I need books about the dogs, dog sledding and the Iditarod race, an IPEVO document system so my students can see the books during our whole class discussions, and fabric so my students can work together to create a wall hanging.

Although we live in Alaska and the Iditarod Dog Sled Race is a big thing, few of my 6th graders get to see any part of it and few of them know the amount of planning, math, physics, and genetics that goes into having a successful sled dog team.

They don't see the math of measuring and weighing things. They don't understand the physics and geometry of building sleds. They also do not understand the genetics of breeding sled dogs. This project will team reading and research about the Iditarod with an opportunity for students to work together to build an Iditarod wall hanging featuring the STEM concepts they learned.

The books in this project were selected to teach students important lessons about dog genetics, the math and engineering of sleds and harness construction. I plan to use the books as whole group discussion starters and to stimulate thinking about how to build sled dog teams. After studying the books, students will construct fabric "report" blocks which summarize their findings and detail the special qualities of team work to achieve a common goal. Please help my students with this STEAM project.
