My Students
My students are a positive, bright, and resilient bunch. Like all children, they can and want to learn about the world they are apart of. They come to school eager to connect with their peers, adults, and the learning - especially when it feels relevant to them and their own lives.
My students inspire me to try to be my very best self every day.
They inspire me as they question, seek to understand, grapple with big ideas of fairness and justice, and act from the heart.
My Project
My students work HARD! The amount of rigorous academic content even kids as young as 1st grade are asked to attend to is quite remarkable. They're learning how to read independently for long stretches of time, work collaboratively on complex math tasks, engage in demanding science lessons, and complete lengthy assessments. They can do it, but it takes a lot of work on their part!
Daily opportunities for unstructured (but teacher-supported) play inside the classroom is critical in early childhood.
When students have the opportunity to sit down in a group to create an intricate K'Nex tower, spin a dramatic play scene with dolls, or work on an elaborate visual art project, they come alive. The room is full of creativity and joy. Unstructured play is a time to resolve conflicts, make new friends, and discover new interests. Unfortunately, the materials in my classroom are OLD and not of high-interest to many of my students. New materials such as Legos, K'Nex, the multi-ethnic Heart to Heart dolls, kinetic sand, new art materials, and much more will liven up their "choice time" and make this sacred time even more fun!
