My students need to bring technology to classroom. This allows us to explore the world of graphic design. I want them to see the different sides of art, math and science!
I work at a school that is currently Title I, and most of our students are at the poverty level. Many of my students come from military families that work on the base near us and the others come from families just trying to survive. Our Military families are often single parent households because the other is deployed. Many students come to school dirty, helpless, and without supplies. Art is such a great outlet for them. They look to the school to help them live a better life. The students are eager to learn! They just need the tools and a little extra TLC to accomplish their goals at school.
My Project
Not only does the cricut come with software to design your project, but it also comes with the ability to carry out your project. My next project is to collaborate with the math and science teachers to create mathmatically guided designs for science signs. We are a coastal science school (next to the naval base). I want to combine art with these subjects to create educational signs to be hung around the school. They will contain coastal science information. The thought is, if we design creative signs students will actually stop and read them. They will be gaining knowledge without even knowing it! From the art perspective, I want my students to take pride in their work. Each class will have a design challenge and from there, we will create a visually beautiful piece. The vinyl adhesive will serve the purpose for the letters and the graphics. I would like to use the heat transfer vinyl to create t-shirts with the students as well. They will design the graphics on the software which will then be cut out on the adhesive heat transfer vinyl. The students will then apply these to painted and dyed clothing. The student will use the etching piece on the cricut to engrave metal and glass containing Mayport’s name. This part of our project will bring in business and math. The students will create their business plans and keep track of their finances. They can use the money as a fund raiser for their graduation celebration. Each 5th grade student will design their own personalized poster on the cricut software. The design will then be cut from the vinyl and applied to their poster.
