Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the future dreamers and thinkers of the world. I teach to a group of 4th and 5th graders that are excited to explore concepts in Engineering, Computer Sciences, Math, the Arts, and the Sciences. After participating in a Rube Goldberg Competition they are fired up to learn more in an afterschool setting.

Due to the socio-economic backgrounds of my students they have limited exposure to technology.

Exposing them to STEAM will prepare them for exciting career opportunities, competitions, and creative learning.

My Project

I have started engaging students at our school in STEAM activities through a Robotics/Engineering Club and now am aiming to reach a wider audience by creating and gathering materials to set up a MakerSpace at our school. I have had the opportunity to support a team of students at this years Rube Goldberg competition. These kids are all fired up to continue learning STEAM.

I have witnessed my students embrace technology and learn through through the use of Google CS-First curriculum, Lego Wedo Robots, and Sphero robots.

I have compiled a list of resources that will continue to expand the knowledge in computer sciences such as the Makey Makey control pads. The Lego Mindstorms set will be used to further their experience with programming robots and to enter a team into the Lego First competition. The K'nex set and circuit board set will be used within the MakerSpace to support student creativity. With the use of the STEAM materials I hope to create a fun and creative space to promote critical thinking.
