Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an economically disadvantaged school and one hundred percent of our students receive free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. My kids are tough, smart, funny and amazing learners. They constantly amaze me with their insight and unique viewpoints on life and the world around them. Our campus is part of the International Baccalaureate Program and our focus is making sure that our students are developing the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.

My Project

I am asking for Makey Makey's, Raspeberry Pi's, and Arduino's as well as consumable resources like foil tape and batteries. My students will use the materials in our makerspace that will be coordinated throughout the school year in our library's Learning Lab. Our students need materials that encourage logical thinking, problem solving skills, and the development of technological skills. The Makey Makeys, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino will help teach important computer programming and engineering skills. We also need some more basic supplies for circuit building like copper tape, led bulbs, and batteries. The addition of these materials will help teach problem solving skills, teamwork, computer coding, and increase their educational and job opportunities for the future.

Makerspace education appeals to everyone on the learning spectrum.

Failing? That's okay. This is the one time at school kids will know it's okay to fail. Why is failing okay? That's how we learn. Failing leads us to developing good problem solving skills. The goal is for us to move from just 'making' things and following directions to becoming 'tinkerers'- playing, experimenting, and creating. You can help my students become the inventors and creators of tomorrow.
