My classroom is made up of 19 sweet and energetic first graders that come to school eager to learn every single day! There is never a dull moment in my classroom as our days are filled with lots of smiles, laughter and engaging learning activities designed to keep my active first graders moving and using their whole bodies as they build their character and learn new concepts and skills that they will use throughout their lives!
My classroom is a place where the students are not passive listeners, but active learners and I strive to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to develop needed social skills that they will take with them throughout their lives.
The students come from a very rural area where our school is considered the heart of our small community. Nearly half of the students in our district qualify for free and reduced price lunches.
My Project
My students love to be creative and explore through hands on activities. The materials requested will go toward creating STEAM bins in my 1st grade classroom. STEAM bins are the perfect tool for providing them with the opportunity to do that. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Students will be able to problem solve with peers as they complete tasks such as how to best construct a city using Magnet Building Tiles, build a pretend animal habitat using the Viaheart Brain Flakes, analyze a variety of 2D and 3D shapes and decide how to best put together the Cossy STEM Learning Construction blocks in a way that can support an object's weight, and recreate famous landmarks and structures around the world using Peradix Building Toys, Emido Building Blocks, and the Qubits Building Set. These bins will have multiple uses during the day. They can be used for morning work, behavior incentives, early finishers, developing fine motor skills, and allowing students to use critical thinking as they problem solve with their peers.
Through STEAM bins, students will be able discover, share, build, design, brainstorm, and develop engineering skills with these building sets.
These activities will not only build self confidence and problem solving skills for my students, they will also encourage teamwork, collaboration and make for classroom discussion that cannot be sparked with worksheets alone. I truly cannot wait to see what my students can make when given the opportunity to freely create using these STEAM based materials. The sky is the limit for them! These materials requested, along with materials I already have in my room, will create the perfect STEAM bins for my students.
