STEAM and The Popcorn Book

My students need 18 books about corn including The Popcorn Book; 22 books about Native cooking, seeds & plants; notebooks, popcorn, storage, a sharpener & art supplies.

My Students

The heart of our second grade science curriculum is the study of plants. I want my second grade scientists, mathematicians, and engineers to expand their learning by looking critically at The Popcorn Book by Tomie DePaola.

My school is close to two military bases and a significant number of my students are dependents of deployed military personnel.

Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. 10% of my children are in a bilingual or ELL program. They want to learn about seeds, plants and popcorn. My students love the picture book by Tomie DePaola but just how accurate is his book about popcorn? Students will begin by studying/ deconstructing the book. Then, they will compare the books to other books on the topic and to seeds and plants. This project will help my students become critical consumers of information. They will learn the importance of asking if the information contained in books is accurate. They will also learn how to find and discover answers via scientific observation.

My Project

My kids are familiar with Tomie DePaola books. They love the pictures and topics but they do not question the accuracy of science behind the books. I have requested copies of The Popcorn Book, copies of nonfiction companion books, books about seeds, plants, science notebooks, different kinds of popcorn, storage/shelving for books and projects and art supplies. My students will begin by critically examining the DePaola book. Students will compare the text to the nonfiction books. Next, they make popcorn and study the size, shape, health and nutrition facts and observe unpopped kernels while making notations in their science notebooks. Students need the storage/shelving for their books, projects and resources. Finally, my students will make an accurate updated popcorn book. Using paper, crayons and other art supplies, each student will create a 16 page book about popcorn, plants and seeds. The completed books will be displayed at our student STEAM fair.

Over 60% of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title I school and we do not have money for special STEAM projects.

This project will have an immediate, lasting impact on my 2nd grade students. They will learn to look critically at the facts presented in books while observing seeds,plants and popcorn. The bonus of this project is that my students will be learning about their world and having fun while learning to think critically.
