My Students

My second grade students are diverse in culture, ethnicity, enthusiasm toward reading, and energy levels. My second graders come from varied backgrounds, have different levels of previous knowledge, and have different levels of motivation for reading and for academics in general. As a school, we're at 45% free/reduced lunch. I have a high energy group that has a strong will to learn and a curiosity about how things work. I am asking for Read Alouds, Flexible Seating Furniture, and Mentor Texts to expand my students' higher order thinking while adhering to our curriculum.

My Project

My second graders are invited to challenge their brains each day. But first, they have to understand that their brain can grow. We have been working on changing our mindsets from fixed to growth. A fixed mindset is when students say, "I can't do it." Instead, we've been saying, "I can train my brain to do it" or "It may take a few extra steps but that's okay."

My second graders are learning that anyone can be anything they want to when they grow up.

Right now we have a shortage of female scientists, engineers, and architects. The books I am requesting tell stories that involve girls and I have hands-on STEAM tasks to go with the stories.
