Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." –John Dewey. Connecting science and art will allow students to see their ideas come to life.
I teach all subjects in a fourth grade classroom with 33 students.
This is a small TK-6th grade school, with a total of 490 students in attendance. We have a diversity of ethnicities and languages. 27% of our students are learning English as their second language. 62% of our students live at or below the line of poverty. I have a great group of learners! They each come to school each day ready to learn. This is a tight-knit community where students are the second or even third generation to attend our school.
My Project
I want to inspire my students with the ability to express themselves through art and the use of a digital cutting machine. I love bringing hand-on elements to my classroom and believe all students can make connections to the curriculum through their creativity.
Every day I strive to develop lessons that motivate students and what better way to motivate them than provide them with tools that enhance learning?
We like to experiment, create, and problem solve, and when we have the proper materials, there are no limits to the heights my students will soar.
The Silhouette Cameo will allow my students to design projects and right before their eyes, be able to see those projects come to fruition. Not only will this be inspiring for them, but also they will see themselves as the creators of complex projects.
One of my biggest projects will be to lead students as they design class shirts and mottos to motivate them and their classmates. After using the Silhouette to cut these designs, we will use the heat press to make our own class shirts. These will be used on class field trips, to motivate students to reach class goals, and on school spirit days.
